Katie Holmes didn’t get to spend her 30th birthday with hubby Tom Cruise, but the Top Gun star made sure his presence was felt on his wife’s big day.
Holmes, who’s starring in the play “All My Sons,” spent Thursday night performing on Broadway, while Cruise was at the L.A. premiere of his new flick Valkyrie.
Tom made up for his absence by sending Katie a giant, five-tiered birthday cake. “It looked like a wedding cake,” an audience member tells CelebTV.com.
When the cake was wheeled out, Katie’s costar John Lithgow announced that Tom Cruise was “heartsick” about missing his wife’s birthday, adding: “Tom has seen the play 15 times. He’s seen the show more than anyone I know.”
Lithgow then invited the crowd to sing “Happy Birthday” to the actress, who “looked embarrassed and covered her mouth,” according to our source.
Holmes then motioned to the stage wing “and out walks little Suri, carrying a blue balloon.”
The toddler, decked out in a plaid dress, red leather dress and silver flats, helped her mom blow out the birthday candles.

Katie Holmes may be starring on Broadway, but in real life she plays proud momma to 2-year-old daughter Suri.
While the mother-daughter look-alikes spend plenty of days in the Big Apple power shopping, Katie says there’s more to the tot than fashion and frolicking.
Following in mom’s footsteps, Suri has taken a liking to Broadway.
“Now I take Suri to the theater. She’s seen Hairspray twice — she waves hello to Tracy Turnblad and says ‘Hi, Tracy.’ She thinks she knows her,” Katie tells the T: The New York Times Style Magazine.
Suri also shares her mom’s creative tendencies. When the toddler told mom she wanted to dress up as “Halloween” for Halloween, Holmes put together homemade black-and-orange costume.
Katie also says that Suri’s a budding jock—and confirmed reports the 2-year-old has an entire apartment devoted to a gym in their East Village building in New York.
The Cruises tell The New York Times how the fell in love after their first date.
Unlike most celebs, Tom Cruise doesn’t necessarily mind when the paparazzi snap pictures of his adorable toddler Suri.
“I have to say some of those paparazzi shots of my daughter are incredible,” Cruise admits in the Australian magazine Grazia.
“As a parent you protect your children, but Suri is a very open and warm child and she will just wave to people on the street. She is such happy, fun girl.”
Suri, Cruise’s 2 ½-year-old daughter with Katie Holmes, charms photogs and fans alike with her signature dark bob and girly dresses.
The toddler even recently nabbed the No. 1 spot in Forbes.com’s list of “Hollywood’s 10 Hottest Tots.”
For his part, Cruise isn’t fazed by all the media attention.
“It is certainly different these days with the media, but people have been very good to us and do give us space so I am not going to be difficult,” Tom tells Grazia.
He also shoots down rumors that he and Katie are expecting baby No. 2.
“We have already heard she’s pregnant but it’s not true. But yes, we will have more children.”
